Churches Thankful for Polymer Slate and Shake Roofing Tiles

“The appeal of polymer roofing’s longevity, aesthetics and durability are greatly appreciated by many church congregations,” says Ray Rosewall, president and CEO of DaVinci Roofscapes. “Within the past few years we’ve been blessed to see a significant increase of our roofing products used for church projects throughout the country. The biggest trend we’ve witnessed is for polymer roofing products to be used on historic churches to replicate the original look of a slate or shake roof.”

Chapel at Dayton VA Medical Center

Originally constructed of slate, the 140+ year old chapel at the Dayton Veterans Administration Medical Center in Ohio now has a DaVinci roof. This historic building’s new roof replicates the original large cross design with a star-studded border in medium tan slate polymer tiles on a background of black slate polymer tiles.

“The availability of different shades of tiles made it possible to accurately duplicate the original design from the chapel’s roof,” says architect Edward Groh with PEDCO, an engineering and architecture firm in Cincinnati, Ohio responsible for designing the roof. “The result is a roof that everyone is exceptionally pleased with and a design that brings the original exterior look back to the chapel.”

Construction on the Dayton VA Medical Center chapel began in 1868 and the Gothic style chapel was completed and dedicated in 1870. Used for both Protestant and Catholic worship services over the years, church services have been well attended by both veterans and area citizens. Now, with a new roof overhead, the chapel can continue serving the community for decades to come.

St. Patrick’s Church

Another historic religious center, St. Patrick’s Church in Terra Haute, Indiana, has been in existence since 1881. After putting up with leaky roofs for years, Bellaforté slate roofing tiles in a blend of greens were recently installed on three of the original four structures.

“This product perfectly replicates the structure’s original roof, but it’s constructed of man-made polymer that will resist all types of weather,” says Brad Lough, co-owner of Lough Brothers Roofing. “Now that the copper gutters are starting to age and gain a greenish patina, we can really see how beautiful this roof will look for years to come.

“I give the DaVinci products and their technical support team an A+ in every way. We had plenty of support for this work along with installation training. This one experience with the Bellaforté product has led me to recommend the DaVinci products for several additional projects.”

Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church

Visitors to the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Johnson City, N.Y. are immediately captivated by the traditional Ukrainian design of the church structure. Topped by three 80-foot tall domes, the massive building looks like it’s made completely of wood shakes on the siding and roof. But, a closer look reveals that the roof is really made of polymer shakes that perfectly replicate real wood shake shingles.

Completed in June of 2011, the reroofing project includes 90 squares of Valoré polymer shake tiles from DaVinci in a Tuscano color blend of light, medium light, medium and dark autumn colors. The architecture style of the landmark church mimics those structures found in the Ukraine.

“The wooden cedar shake roof installed on the church in 1977 deteriorated so badly that we started looking at alternative material options back in 1995,” says Rev. Teodor B. Czabala, Jr. “We searched for a product that would not need replacing for many years. Our research brought us to the DaVinci shake roofing tiles. We’re thrilled with the 50-year limited warranty on the product and how these polymer tiles have already stood up to the weather conditions in our area.

“The new polymer shakes look almost identical to the older wooden ones, but these will last so much longer. The wood exterior of the church has been cleaned and stained, so now the structure looks perfect. We’re both amazed and pleased that these man-made roofing tiles could have such a positive and beautiful impact on our facility.”

St. Clement Eucharistic Shrine

Thanks to the efforts of volunteer church members, the St. Clement Eucharistic Shrine in Boston has a new roof overhead. Scrambling high atop the famous Roman Catholic Church on Boylston Street, the church members replaced heavy, old slate shingles with lightweight polymer tiles from DaVinci.

“The research I did showed that the Bellaforté tiles from DaVinci have a long lifespan and can withstand a wide variety of severe weather,” says Father Peter Grover, OMV. “We selected the slate gray color of tiles which has received many compliments from our members and the neighborhood residents.

“This product truly looks like the original slate tile that was placed on our church and chapel more than 75 years ago. The Bellaforté product allowed us to preserve both the historical look and feel of our facilities. We also gained the advantage that these polymer tiles resist fire, high winds and severe weather. That gives us all peace-of-mind knowing that our church facility and seminary are protected.”

Churches Coast-to-Coast

In addition to the projects listed above, the following churches have also had new polymer DaVinci roofs installed within the past several years:

  • Cynthiana Baptist Church in Cynthiana, Kentucky
  • Unitarian Universalists Church of Muncie, Indiana
  • Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles, California
  • St. Louis Catholic Church in Fairfax, Virginia

DaVinci Roofscapes has manufactured award-winning synthetic slate and shake roofing since 1999. The polymer roofing tiles are virtually maintenance free and far more cost effective than the natural product.

Clay Roofing Tiles Destroyed by Hail Storm

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – After a ferocious hail storm destroyed the 80-year-old clay roofing tiles on his home in 2010, homeowner Dean Imel described the storm as “tennis balls of ice” that pounded his community.

“This was the worst hail storm I’d ever seen,” says Imel, who lives in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma. “The ground was completely dry, yet the force of the hail penetrated almost four inches into the soil. Our roof looked like someone had taken a rototiller to it … the devastation was massive.”

While meeting with his insurance adjuster after the storm, Imel learned that the only roofing product in his area untouched by the massive hail storm was the polymer roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes®. “I wanted a product that would provide us with security from future storms while at the same time mimic our original Ludowci Roof Tile,” says Imel. “I found both with DaVinci’s multi-width Slate tile in a Vineyard blend of grays, tans, violets, green and amber.”

Impact- and fire-resistant, the polymer roofing tiles manufactured by DaVinci are Class 4 impact rated, making it possible for them to handle severe weather conditions. The roofing tiles are resistant to straight line winds tested at 110 mph and also have a Class A rating for fire retardance.

DaVinci Roofscapes uses virgin resins to assure product consistency and longevity in their roofing tiles, which are backed by a 50-year limited lifetime warranty. The proprietary engineered polymer incorporates fire retardant and state-of-the-art UV and color stabilizers specifically formulated to withstand the wide variety of challenging environments that roofing materials are exposed to year after year.

Up On the Roof

To replace his destroyed roof, Imel relied on CMR Construction and Roofing, LLC out of Tulsa. The company, licensed in 20 states, has installed 29 DaVinci roofs nationwide in recent years chiefly because of their appearance backed by their ability to withstand severe weather conditions.

“The DaVinci product has the beauty of natural slate, but with less cost and less weight, so it’s extremely popular in our area,” says Kevin Smith, project leader for the Imel house, with CMR Construction & Roofing, LLC. “Of all the synthetic slate products that have entered the market, DaVinci is the only one that has withstood the test and lived up to expectations. Many of its competitor’s products exit within just a few short years in the market. It’s the only product I recommend if a customer is looking for polymer slate products.”

The Imel’s house had a steep slope to their roof (10/12) so the CMR Construction & Roofing team had to take extra precautions for safety, such as harnesses for the crew and toe-boards. “The toe-boards provided sure footing and helped prevent supplies or equipment from falling off the roof,” says Smith. “The final results of this re-roofing project are stunning. Most importantly, these homeowners have the peace-of-mind of knowing that a hail storm will never again cause damage to their roof.”

For Dean Imel, the entire process went smoothly after the storm subsided. “My wife and I felt that the color blend we selected matched up well with our English Tudor style home,” says Imel. “Then, the crew from CMR made our experience even better.

“I’ve personally been in the construction business for more than 30 years and know the difference between a good job and a mediocre one. Since I was at home during the roofing installation, I got to see them working every day. What impressed me was their attention to detail. CMR is a truly professional team that provided us with a top-rated roof that is unmatched in the marketplace. There simply is not another product out there that provides the durability, hail resistance and appearance that can touch the DaVinci roofing product.”

Lumber Liquidators

What Homeowners Want From Their Roofs

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Polymer Roof Tiles - DaVinci RoofscapesKANSAS CITY, KAN. – In the 2011 DaVinci Roofscapes’ Homeowners Exterior Preferences Study, more than 1,000 homeowners* overwhelming indicated that durability and longevity were the two key aspects that will influence the type of roof they purchase for their homes in the future.

Results of the nationwide consumer study, conducted by Harris Interactive©, show that 88 percent of the respondents indicate that the durability of a roofing product will have “a lot of influence” on the product they select when it comes time to purchase a new roof.

“Extreme weather events have increased in frequency and severity in the past decade and that has changed the way people think about their roofs,” says Ray Rosewall, CEO and president of DaVinci Roofscapes. “It used to be that if you lived in the southern states, winter weather was mild. Now those same states routinely experience the damaging winds and hail that were only seen in the warmer months in the past.

“These weather events are increasing in frequency and severity and are now occurring in almost every state. With the dramatic weather changes we’ve experienced recently it’s no wonder homeowners name durability as their number one influencer when considering the purchase of a new roof.”

When do homeowners plan to replace their roofs and what influences that decision? In the same study, 65 percent of homeowners indicated they would be prompted to replace their roof if it became damaged from severe weather. Another 23 percent reported that their current roof is old and will soon need to be replaced, with an additional 13 percent indicating that their roof is near the end of its warranty and needs to be replaced.
Top 10 Influencers

Homeowners ranked the following factors as having “a lot of influence” in the decision-making process for the type of new roof to purchase:

88 percent – Durability
83 percent – Longevity/Built to Last
72 percent – Low/No Maintenance
71 percent – Resistant to Severe Weather
69 percent – Has a Warranty
57 percent – Fire Resistancy
55 percent – Material Roof is Made Out of
50 percent – Price
41 percent – Colors Available
24 percent – Complements the Neighborhood Setting

“Everyone is cost conscious but it’s interesting to see that homeowners are putting more value on the inherent quality and durability of the alternatives when looking at the cost of a new roof,” says Rosewall. “We believe this truly reflects the thought process of the homeowner that a roof is an investment in their home, and as such, they will get more value from a quality roof versus a lower cost bargain-basement priced roof.

“Every feature rated by homeowners on this top 10 list of roofing purchase influencers is available in our polymer shake and slate roofing tiles. With a 50-year warranty, DaVinci roofing tiles are a solid investment in an easy-care roof that’s built to last and give the homeowner peace-of-mind.”

Study Methodology

This 15-minute survey was conducted online within the U.S. by Harris Interactive on behalf of DaVinci Roofscapes among 1,005 U.S. homeowners age 40+ with household incomes of $150,000 or more and who own a single-family home of at least $400,000 in value in the South and Midwest, at least $500,000 in the Northeast and West (excluding California) and at least $700,000 in California between November 22 and December 13, 2011 (percentages for some questions are based on a subset, based on their responses to certain questions). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
