Build The U.S. - Products Made in AmericaBuilding on an October 10, 2011, World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer report entitled, “Made in America: A Blueprint for Creating Jobs,” local architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry insiders work to harness the “Build the U.S” movement.

The ABC piece introduced viewers to Anders Lewendal, an economist turned builder, hard at work constructing a house made entirely from U.S.-made products. Everything from the nails, screws and bolts, to the steel, staples and bathtub is made in America.

Lewendal is convinced that if every builder bought just five percent more U.S.-made materials, they would create 220,000 jobs.

Intent on creating a network of American-made products, manufacturers and services, Dudley Powell and Gary Rackliff, two Orlando businessmen and College Park residents with decades of architectural and visualization experience between them, developed to help like-minded AEC professionals find resources and products found only in America.

I’ve talked to a lot of building contractors and architects who love the idea of buying and specifying American,” Powell said. “These two industries have been devastated in recent years, and people are excited about boosting our economy while bringing jobs back to America. It really is a win-win idea.”

Southern Traditions Development Inc. owner and College Park resident Jon Pleveich has signed on to develop the All-American Florida Home. The home will be located on Helen Street in College Park which is a suburb of Orlando, with groundbreaking slated for June.

We’re calling it the Eleanor House, after the iconic 1971 Mustang Mach 1 muscle car,” Plevich said. “Ford Motor Company named that particular car Eleanor, and nothing says America better than the Ford Mustang. The Eleanor House will also be American-made; nothing but U.S.-made products will be used to build her.”

Plevich, along with Jim Lucia, owner of Lucia Custom Home Designers, have challenged themselves to find American-made products first, and then design the house around the products.

Spectators can soon watch the home’s progress on, where Build the U.S. will showcase, report and update on the progress, companies and products used in the home.

Build The US is a rapidly-growing, searchable database, and not just a list of products and services. Its goal is to connect and showcase American-made products to builders and designers like Plevich and Lucia.
